F i r s t Ai d Rooms

Managers shou ld cons ider the need fo r a fi r st a id room o r des ignated

fir st a id area in consu l tation with emp loyees.

Fi rst a id rooms may be requ i red when sta tis tica l ev idence shows t here

is a h igh leve l of need.

Otherwise, f ir st a id rooms may on ly be

requ i red when ma jor bu ild ing renovat ions or changes occur , or set up

in the case of an eme rgency affect ing a number of peop le, such as an

ep idemic o r s ite catast roph ic event.

In the event of a fir st a id room be ing requ ired, the fo l lowing

requ i rement s shou ld be conside red:

The size of the room provided should be sufficient for its purpose. The room

should be well illuminated and ventilated. The access door to the room should

provide easy access to injured people who may need to be supported or moved by

stretcher or wheelchair. The room should have easy access to toilets.

Room Contents

The following items may be appropriate:

resuscitation mask;

sink and wash basin with hot and cold water supplied;

work bench or dressing trolley;

cupboards for storage of medicaments, dressing and linen;

soiled dressing container;

electric power points;

medical examination couch with blankets and pillow;

upright chairs;

removable screen;

desk and telephone;

stretcher; and

a First Aid Kit appropriate to the workplace.
